Participant FAQs

How can I find a public event site in my neighborhood?

You can view a list of public events on the locations page.

There isn't a location near me, what can I do?

You can host a location. It only needs two breastfeeding women to count and you might be amazed by how many people show up once you start spreading the word.

What if my child does not want to breastfeed at this time?

We respect our breastfed children to make that choice. Women not actually breastfeeding during this time are not to be included in the count, but we would like them to register.

What do you consider 'latched on' or 'breastfeeding' in order to be counted at 10:30am?

Breastfeeding means a child's mouth latched on around a woman's nipple, attached and sustained for one full minute. As long as the woman and child/children are breastfeeding continuously during that time, they can be counted. Each baby/child can be counted as one. This means that a woman tandem breastfeeding will count as two!

Do I need to register before the day?

No, you do not need to register before the day. You can just show up to any of the locations listed on the website. Some locations might like you to pre register so they know who is coming, but you do not have to.

I have been invited to a location that is not listed on the website, what does this mean?

The locations can choose to be private and not listed but if this is the case you should know the people who are inviting you to attend.

What do I have to do on the day?

1. Get to your chosen location by 10am to give you plenty of time. If you are running late, don't worry - your host will help you out when you arrive.

2. Complete the registration form (even if your host is expecting you, you still need to sign in on the day).

3. Get settled in and comfortable.

4. Listen for the count down and other instructions.

5. Get your baby or child latched on and put your hand up so you can be counted.

6. To be counted your baby or child must be latched on from 10:30 to 10:31am, one full minute.

Can I use a supplementer?

Yes, you can. We are counting latches, so provided your baby/child's mouth is around your nipple, it counts!

Can I bottle feed with expressed milk?

No. We are counting latches, so if you can get your baby or child to latch (provided your baby/child's mouth is around your nipple) just for the minute, it counts.

Can I use a nipple shield?

Yes, you can. We are counting latches, so provided your baby/child's mouth is around your nipple, it counts!

Does it cost anything to attend a Big Latch On location?

No, attending the Big Latch On is free.

Where can I get the official Big Latch On t- shirt or other merchandise?

You can order it from our online store.

Can family and friends come too?

Yes, they can. Everyone is welcome to attend and join in the fun. Some locations might have limited space: if this is the case they will have put details on the listing

Is there an age limit for breastfeeding children?

No. Breastfeeding babies and children of all ages are welcome to attend.

What if I do not wish to be photographed?

There may be media or photographers present at your location. If you do not want to your photograph taken and used by Big Latch On, please do not complete the photo waiver on the registration form and please make sure your host knows so they can ensure you will not inadvertently appear in a photographer's field.
