Host FAQs

Where can the Big Latch On be held?

In a backyard, at a playground, in a park, at a beach, in a local meeting room, at a civic center, in a hospital, health center, coffee shop, workplace - wherever you want to meet!

Can the Big Latch On be held virtually?

No. An important part of the Big Latch On’s aims is to build local communities and support normalisation of breastfeeding in public. We do recognise that many women are part of online communities and we want to work towards holding a separate online event in the future – if you are interested in helping with this or have any ideas about what it should look like please get in touch via the contact form.

Can we have a private location?

Yes. Please register by emailing your location details to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Private events will not appear on our website.

How long does the Big Latch On last?

All breastfeeding women who have their child latched on, will be timed for one minute from 10:30 to 10:31am local time. Participants should arrive at least 30 minutes in advance to sign in.

Can we hold the Big Latch On as part of another event?

Your Big Latch On can be part of a picnic, play date, fair or other activity of your choosing providing the activity is complaint with the WHO International Code of Marketing Breast-milk Substitutes.

How large must an event be to be counted?

It can be as large as you want, or as few as 2 mother-baby dyads, as long as there is at least one non-participating adult witness present to verify the results. See Witnesses, Count and Time FAQ's for more information.

Who can attend?

If your location is public and listed on the website then anyone can attend, including family members which may mean older children. If you have a reason for wanting to limit who attends to participants only, then please put this on your listing by using the description box on the registration form. If your location is private and therefore not listed on the website only people who you invite will be able to attend.

How do we know how many people to expect at our location?

You don’t, its part of the fun of the Big Latch On; whatever happens on the day, happens. You may ask participants to contact you if they plan to attend your location but they do not have to and they may also plan to attend but on the day go somewhere else or not make it out of the house.

Who can register a location for the Big Latch On?

Local breastfeeding groups, LLL groups, interested mothers, nurses, lactation consultants, hospitals, WIC coordinators, business owners, doulas, internet parenting groups, anyone interested in promoting breastfeeding.

Who CANNOT register a location for the Big Latch On?

Any company that is in violation of the World Health Organization International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. Learn More.

Can I hold a big latch on, on both days?

Yes, you can but you will need to register for both days separately.

I created an account but cannot see my location listed. Why?

Your location might not be listed for two reasons:

1. You created an account but did not complete the registration form; log back in at Registration Page and complete the form

2. You completed the registration form and selected Private location. Contact us to change this; you will need to include all your details, all the location details, the Location ID code and the changes that need to be made.

How do I make changes to my listing?

To make changes to your event details you need to log in and go to the 'My Events' link on the Host Menu

How do I cancel my location?

If you need to cancel your listing at any time contact us; you will need to include all your details, all the location details, the Location ID code. Please be aware that you are responsible for making sure your community is informed of the cancellation. This means you need to spread the word about the cancellation in all the places you originally advertised and you will need to make arrangements for the women who have not heard about the cancellation and still turn up to your location.

What's the deadline for registering a location?

You can register a location until 10am local time on the day of the Big Latch On.

Please register as soon as possible. The earlier you register your location the more time you will have to promote it and the more women will hear about it via the website listing. You will also be included in the newsletter for longer, which will be sharing more tips and information about hosting, plus you will have more time to have any questions answered by the Big Latch On support team.
